Final Project Summary

Topic

In this project, we explore the current virtual reality technology, including general experience, equipment, and design software.

Here’s our Final sitemap:

Design Process

At first, we decided to explore AR/VR and related technologies. We read many articles and online resources. Since we are all UI/UX designers, we found that VR interface design and application in productivity and design software is interesting. We decided to write about it and assigned everyone a topic. We used Google Docs for collaborative writing Zotero for citation. After writing, we considered our platform for presentation, and we chose WordPress finally. It is a very powerful content management system, and we want to learn about it. We designed a logo for our site and experimented with applying our sitemap and content structure on WordPress.

Technology

Generally, we used Google Drive to organize our reading materials and collaborative documents. We collected reading materials with Google and EBSCO provided by Pratt Institute.  During the research process, the Zotero was used as a plugin to organize the research paper, work on the bibliography and assist citation. Google Docs allows us to refine each others’ articles, and we also used Grammarly to check our writing. Finally, we used WordPress to build our website.

Summary of purpose and content

We introduced the concept of VR technology, and we try to explain it from a designer’s perspective. In the Introduction of VR Experience, we introduced VR’s background and the principle to bring our audience into the VR world. Spatial cognition, physical discomfort, and visual efforts are pain points of current VR technology, and these three pages will help us to reconsider VR as an experience. In the Equipment & Interaction section, we explored the real space and the human’s senses. We analyzed the difference between real space and the VR space on the Introduction page. In Body Movement, Gesture, Vision (HMDs), Sound, and Other Senses, we talked about the current technology applied in these human senses and our speculations of future development. In the final part, Current Application Review, we critiqued 3 VR based design software: Sketchup Viewer, VR Sketch, and Gravity Sketch. These VR applications enhance the user experience for designers and boost the decision-making process for stakeholders at the same time. While VR technology expands vision and workspace with an immersive experience, there are user interface and user experience design issues need to be solved.

A reflection on your group’s process and final website

As a group project, how to focus on the same aspect is a consider. The technologies we used during the process are effective. At the start of the project, we had difficulty narrowing down the topic, because VR is a broad topic with different aspects. Besides, we plan to create a design-focused website with a series of fancy imagery and visual effects using HTML and CSS. As the process going, we find that we have more interest in the research content, so we think it’s better to show more depth research and WordPress as a powerful content management system is a better tool for that.

If we had more time to work on this project, the interface design principles, UX challenges, and future trends of VR would be further discussed.
